SNOW POND ARTS ACADEMY
We want children at SPAA to learn, to lead and to make a difference
Snow Pond Arts Academy (SPAA) aims to transform students’ lives and contribute to the cultural capital of central Maine by providing a high quality, comprehensive, college preparatory academic and arts education in an inclusive, nurturing, and culturally rich environment for high school students. Located on a 40 acre campus on Messalonskee Lake (aka Snow Pond) in Sidney, the picturesque setting provides the ideal environment for learning.
SPAA will be dedicated to academic excellence, commitment to the performing arts, leadership, integrity, and a virtuous code of conduct, all of which prepare students to meet the demands of a contemporary world through thoughtful attention to curriculum, culture, and civic responsibilities.
SPAA will be open to all young people in Maine who will be entering the 9th, 10th or 11th grade.
We will open with approximately 124 students (64-72 9th graders, and 52-60 10th & 11th graders.) The 12th grade will be added in its second year of operation to complete a 4-year high school.
The performing arts curriculum in music, theater and dance will include: lessons, technique classes, small and large group ensembles, comprehensive courses in theory, history, and more. SPAA students will be more than musicians and artists; they will be prepared for a lifetime of learning, leadership and active citizenship.
State statute requires us to provide transportation within an 8 mile radius of the Snow Pond campus, located at 8 Goldenrod Lane, Sidney, Maine. SPAA is considering bus routes within a 12-15 mile radius. Families living outside this area, will need to drop their child off at one of these designated bus stops.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE WITH SNOW POND ARTS ACADEMY?
The non-academic benefits of the arts are profound-they help young people build the skills needed for success. Most importantly, the study of the arts teaches students to think creatively, problem-solve, and become detail-oriented. SPAA looks at education as both the accumulation of knowledge and the cultivation of engagement, imagination, leadership and collaboration.
SPAA will use a unique blended learning model. This approach uses a combination of online as well as face to face instruction where teachers facilitate group interactions and discussions in the classroom, based on an online learning curriculum, offering students greater control of the time, pace, and place of their learning. The online curriculum will be coordinated with academic and arts curriculum materials to create a robust and integrated program. Each student will also have a Personal Learning Plan based on their unique qualities that will be used for goal setting, self-regulation, self-assessment, and reporting.
A TYPICAL SCHOOL DAY
School will run from 8:15 – 4:45 Monday thru Thursday, and 8:15-1:30 on Friday. (These times are approximate.) The day will be broken up by lunch, snack breaks and physical activity. The integration of arts into academic work will provide opportunities for movement and “right brain” activity. We know from experience that students will find this to be an engaging and enriching full day of arts and academics.
- SPAA will use an arts-integrated “STEAM” approach, incorporating the Arts into the “STEM” subjects: science, technology, engineering and math.
- 2 ½ hours each day will be devoted to English, language arts, social studies and world languages. The arts will be incorporated into these subjects as well.
- There will be a 2 hour block each day for the performing arts. Classes in theory and technical aspects of the arts will be combined with instruction, coaching and participation in performance, music, theatre and dance.
- All classes will meet the Maine Learning Results.
- Adequate time will be provided for academic assistance as needed.
